Bob Dylan: The Third One Now

I (Lonesome Sparrow) haven't heard or seen this CD set. The information
that follows I have compiled from various sources.

This 3 CD set is the third volume of "The Genuine Bootleg Series". It
comes in a four-fold glossy slipcase like "The Genuine Bootleg Series"
and "The Genuine Bootleg Series Take 2". It has a 40 page booklet
filled with text and pictures. Many of these pictures are reported to
be rare and unpublished. The sound quality is reported to be
outstanding throughout, with tracks released on earlier bootleg CDs
having received a significant upgrade in quality.

Track list:

1.1. Hard Times In New York Town

29 January 1962, one of the McKenzie Tapes. Listed as being
from the "Smith Home Tapes" (the McKenzies were referred
to as the "Smiths" in the first edition of the Scaduto
biography). Far better quality than the recording that has
been circulating before the release of this CD set. First
          appearance on glass-mastered CD.

1.2. The Death Of Emmett Till

29 January 1962, one of the McKenzie Tapes. Listed as being
from the "Smith Home Tapes". A McKenzie Tapes recording that
didn't circulate before the release of this CD set. Clinton
Heylin lists this performance in his book "Day By Day".

1.3. Sally Gal
      The Girl I Left Behind

        Oscar Brand's Folk Song Festival, 29 October 1961, WBAI-FM,
New York, New York, U.S.A. Earlier released on bootleg CD
"Bob Dylan Sings For His Supper" in slightly better
quality. There is no index mark for "The Girl" so these
two songs form one track, but they are separate
          performances.

1.4. I Rode Out One Morning
1.5. House Of The Risin' Sun

12 April 1963, Fourth McKenzie Tape. Listed as being
from the "Smith Home Tapes". First appearance on glass-
mastered CD. Far better quality (stereo) than previously
          circulating recordings.

1.6. See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
1.7. Ballad Of Donald White

1962, Third McKenzie Tape. Listed as being from the "Smith
Home Tapes". First appearance on glass-mastered CD. Far
better quality (stereo) than previously circulating
          recordings.

1.8. Farewell

        Witmark demo, March 1963

1.9. Percy's Song

Live, 26 October 1963, Carnegie Hall, New York, New York,
U.S.A. Worse quality than on the bootleg CD "Bob Dylan In
Concert" on the Wild Wolf label.

1.10. I Shall Be Free # 10 (false start)
1.11. I Shall Be Free # 10

Studio, 9 June 1964 (Another Side sessions). Some mixed-up
confusion here: Bob Meyer has reported these as alternate
versions from acetate that have not been circulating
before the release of this CD set. Alan Fraser has
written than on his copy track 10 is 3:38 and track 11 is
1:37 - the other way round. According to one Baker this
is just one track with a "rogue" index mark and is it from
the previously circulating acetate (one of the Emmett
Grogan ones, I presume). According to the writer of the
"Deep Beneath The Waves" articles the full track is not
the alternate take from the Emmett Grogan acetates or the
          CD-ROM "Highway 61 Interactive".

1.12. If You Gotta Go, Go Now

Live, 31 October 1964, Philharmonic Hall, New York, New York,
U.S.A. Listed as a live recording from 1965. Plays too fast.
Significant worse quality than on some of the earlier
          releases.

1.13. It's Alright, Ma

Les Crane Show, 17 February 1965, A.B.C.-TV studios, New York,
New York, U.S.A. Reported as being of significant better
          quality than on earlier releases.

1.14. Tombstone Blues

With backing vocals from the Chambers Brothers. Studio, 29
July 1965 (Highway 61 Revisited sessions). Reported as being
of significant better quality than on earlier releases.

1.15. From A Buick 6

Live, 3 September 1965, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, California,
U.S.A. Worse quality than on "From Newport to the Ancient
          Empty Streets of LA".

1.16. Visions Of Johanna

Live, 16 May 1966, Gaumont Theatre, Sheffield, England. Not
circulating before the release of this CD set.

1.17. Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat

Live, 14 May 1966, Odeon, Liverpool, England. Not circulating
before the release of this CD set.

2.1. Mr. Tambourine Man

Live, 16 May 1966, Gaumont Theatre, Sheffield, England. Not
circulating before the release of this CD set.

2.2. This Wheel's On Fire

1967, Basement Tapes. Stereo mix. There is a sound problem
at the beginning of the first verse ("if your memory serves
you well we were goin' to meet again and [glitch/skip]"),
which is not the case on the earlier releases. Apart
from that, the quality is significantly better than on
          earlier releases.

2.3. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
2.4. I Shall Be released
2.5. Too Much Of Nothing
2.6. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

1967, Basement Tapes. Stereo mixes with significant better
         quality than on earlier releases.

2.7. Folsom Prison Blues
2.8. Ring Of Fire

Studio, 3 May 1969 (Self Portrait sessions). Better quality
than on the bootleg CD "Possum Belly Overalls", but still
          not great.

2.9. Went To See The Gypsy
2.10. If Not For You

Studio, 1970 (New Morning sessions). Alternate versions,
not circulating before the release of this CD set.

2.11. Sign On The Window

Studio, 1970 (New Morning sessions). Same take as on "New
Morning", but with overdubs of several instruments.

2.12. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
      Sweet Amarillo

Studio, February 1973 (Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid sessions).
Reported as being of significant better quality than on
          earlier releases.

2.13. Nobody 'Cept You

Live, 11 January 1974, Forum de Montreal, Montreal, Quebec,
Canada. First appearance on glass-mastered CD. Audience
recording. Very low generation, according to Baker.
(Still?) significant better quality than the previously
circulating recordings, according to Bob Meyer.

2.14. Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts
2.15. If You See Her, Say Hello

Studio, September 1974 (Blood On The Tracks New York sessions)

2.16. Simple Twist Of Fate
2.17. Oh Sister

The World Of John Hammond, 10 September 1975, WTTW-TV Studios,
Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. Reported as being of significant
better quality than on earlier releases.

2.18. Rita Mae

Studio, 14 July 1975 (Desire sessions). Not the B side that is
on "Masterpieces", but an earlier take. Reported as not
having circulated before the release of this CD set.

3.1. Never Let Me Go

Live, 4 December 1975, Forum de Montreal, Montreal, Quebec,
Canada. Released on the "Renaldo & Clara" promo EP.

3.2. Sign Language

With Eric Clapton. Studio, March 1976. According to Bob
Meyer an outtake with significant better quality than
what was earlier circulating. According to Baker the
official cut from Eric Clapton's album "No Reason To Cry".

3.3. Ballad Of A Thin Man
3.4. Blowin In The Wind
3.5. Blowin In The Wind

Studio rehearsals, January - February 1978. Not circulating
before the release of this CD set.

3.6. Shot Of Love

Studio, 1981 (Shot Of Love sessions). Alternate
version, not circulating before the release of this CD
          set.

3.7. Watered-Down Love

Studio, May 1981 (Shot Of Love sessions). Alternate
          version with an extra verse.

3.8. Tangled Up In Blue

Live, 19 June 1984, Roma Palaeur, Rome, Italy. Soundboard
recording. Significant better quality than on earlier
          releases.

3.9. A Couple More Years

Studio, 27 - 28 August 1986 (Hearts Of Fire sessions)

3.10. The French Girl

With the Grateful Dead. Rehearsals, March - April 1987.
Significant better quality than on earlier releases. Doesn't
have the dropout that's on the bootleg CD "The French Girl".

3.11. Series Of Dreams

Studio, March 1989 (Oh Mercy sessions). Alternate version.
May be a version that hasn't been circulating before the
release of this CD set. Or maybe it's the alternate mix
          from the promotional CD.

3.12. Ring Them Bells

Live, May 1994, The Great Music Experience, Todaiji Temple,
Nara, Japan. Listed as being from the 20 May show, but
Masato Kato wrote that he's sure it's from the 22 May show
and probably taken from the TV broadcast. If Masato is right,
this has been released before. If he's not, then this was
previously only circulating as an audience recording.

3.13. Handy Dandy

Studio, 6 January 1990 (Under The Red Sky sessions). Alternate
version, not circulating before the release of this CD set.

3.14. T.V. Talkin' Song

Studio, March 1990 (Under The Red Sky sessions). Alternate
version, not circulating before the release of this CD set.

3.15. Any Way You Want Me

Studio, September 1994. Not circulating before the release of
          this CD set.

3.16. My Blue-Eyed Jane

Studio, 9 - 11 May 1994. Alternate version with Emmylou Harris.

3.17. Blind Willie McTell

Live, 24 August 1997, WolfTrap, Filene Center, Vienna, Virginia,
U.S.A. Reported by some as an audience recording, not the
hearing impaired line transmission recording as on various
earlier releases, by others as being that recording. Baker
speaks here of an "induction loop tape", whatever that means.

3.18. Hard Times

Studio, 28 April 1993, Willie Nelson's Big 60. Significant better
          quality than previously circulating.

3.19. Restless Farewell

Live, 19 November 1995, Frank Sinatra 80th Birthday Tribute,
          Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California

The booklet contains the Song Talk interview with Paul Zollo from the early 90's The last words are missing. It should end with the following words: "There's something about my lyrics that just have a gallantry to them. And that might be all they have going for them. [laughs.] However, it's no small thing."
