Subject: Dylan: Collecting the '60's
From: "R. Sweener"
Date: 1995/05/16
Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan

Hi, all.

Keep an eye out for my guide to collecting unreleased
dylan material of the 1960's. It is comprised of the
best cd sources according to what I have been able
to surmise from ftp files, rmd posts, inquiries to
people familiar with the titles, and help from EDLIS.
It was gathered for my personal use,
but I thought it would be nice to share.

You will need Krogsgaard's book, as it is referenced to
the numbers he assigns performances. I check my copy
out from the library.

I may add dates in the future, but I'm trying to start off
as lean as possible (thus only the prefered cds, not
all, and no track listings.)

Something like this should have been out long ago.
Check other groups, like Springsteen, REM, U2...
They all have comprehensive guides.

Well, better late than never. I hope this can help some
people.

Best wishes,
Rick Sweeney

Subject: 60's Dylan on CD #1(2) [LONG!] From: "R. Sweener" Date: 1995/05/17 Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan BOB DYLAN: The 60's On CD This is a reference to the Bob Dylan material of the 1960's that has been documented on cd, aside from legitimate releases. (This is not concerned with sideman performances or interviews). These titles are what I believe to be the best sources, based on info I have gathered from various ftp files, rec.music.dylan postings, inquiries I have made to people on the net, and help from EDLIS. - It is organized according to numbers assigned by Krogsgaard in his reference book, _Positively Bob Dylan_. - Positively Bob Dylan: A Thirty Year Discography, Concert & Recording Session Guide, 1960-1991 by Michael Krogsgaard. Ann Arbor, MI: Popular Culture, 1991. 498 p. ISBN: 1560750006 LCCN: 89-92336 - Note: Krogsgarrd #'s with asterisks are not actually in Krogsgaard. I made them up, using a number I thought would place the material in appropriate context. - Label info is given on the first mention of a cd title only. Krogs. #'s to the right of the title indicate the contents of the cd. - _____________________________________________________ [002] The Dylan's Root [002, 010] Skeleton SKCD 1001 _____________________________________________________ [004] The Minnesota Tapes [004,014] Wanted Man _____________________________________________________ [007] Gaslight Tapes [007, 030] OR: [007] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] 4 CD's Magic Music CD 31001, 31002, 31003, 31004 _____________________________________________________ [010] The Dylan's Root [002,010] _____________________________________________________ [011]offers unreleased #6 The Bootleg [011, 015, 019] Wanted Man Music - WMM 022 _____________________________________________________ [014] The Minnesota Tapes [004, 014] _____________________________________________________ [015] The Bootleg [011, 015, 019] _____________________________________________________ [017.05*] Folksinger's Choice [017.05*] Yellow Dog - YD 017 _____________________________________________________ [019]offers two unreleased tracks The Bootleg [011, 015, 019] _____________________________________________________ [021] Paranoid Blues [021, 026, 039, 064] Diamonds in your Ear CD 42 Produced by Flashback Worldproductions 1990 see also: Bob Dylan's Dream Vol. 2 [021,025,045,096] Living Legend Records LLR-CD012 Bob Dylan's Dream : Historic Live Performances Vol. II Living Legend Records, LLR-CD012, 1988 _____________________________________________________ [022] Live, Finjan Club, Montreal, Canada Yellow Dog Records - YD 010 OR: [022] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] _____________________________________________________ [Various] 7 Years Of Bad Luck [various outtakes] Spank Records - SP 102 _____________________________________________________ [Various] The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan Outtakes [various outtakes] Vigotone - VIGO 115 72:38 _____________________________________________________ [025] Bob Dylan's Dream Vol. 2 [021,025,045,096] _____________________________________________________ [026] Paranoid Blues [021, 026, 039, 064] see also Songs That Made Him Famous [026, 039, 082.1] Tough Bites and Before The Flood And After The Fire [026, 044, 046] Luna Records - LU 9318 _____________________________________________________ [030] Gaslight Tapes [007, 030] OR: [030] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] _____________________________________________________ [035] The Witmark Years [035] Capricorn _____________________________________________________ [038] Dr. Zimmerman's Original Old Time Hootenany [038, 056, 064] Archive Productions, AP 89003, [?1990] Disc title: Bob Dylan "Who You Really Are" Matrix: AP 89003 T204-6001 01 _____________________________________________________ [039] Paranoid Blues [021, 026, 039, 064] see also Songs That Made Him Famous [026, 039, 082.1] _____________________________________________________ [041] Bob Dylan "In Concert" [041, 061] Capricorn Records Col. Subject: Gaslight and Finjan From: "R. Sweener" Date: 1995/05/18 Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan Dan B. < BREAZEAL@UKCC.UKY.EDU > commented on Rare Live Performances in the Sixties/ Bob Dylan [1962] Vol. I-III, The History Series (3CD). This is distributed by Magic Music, the same people who made the 4CD set Documents Of Dylan that I listed. Assuming the sound quality to be equal to that set, then I am told that Finjan Club by Yellow Dog is in equal or superior sound. I also read that the Gaslight material on Documents was equal to that of the Gaslight Tapes cd. If all this is true, then it's just a matter of which cds can be found cheapest. If anyone knows more on the comparison of these cd sources, please post it and let us know. Regarding "Rare Live...", wonder why they didn't just include all the Finjan material on the last cd (and in order) instead of splitting it up like that? Thanks for the info, Dan. Rick

That's the one for you to get. But for those of us in the U.S. and outside of Europe, the cost of obtaining that set will rise, once you figure in shipping and the cost of the jewel boxes, which I'd bet they don't include in that price. Hopefully, it's still cheaper than Documents of Bob Dylan. I think I estimated that would end up costing me about $56 to order it mail-order from Magic Com, all told. (magiccom@edina.xnc.com) Still not that bad a price. Could you please fill us in on this "2001" mail-order? Also, does anyone have a clue what 15.90DM converts to in U.S. dollars? Thanks, Rick
Subject: 60's Dylan on CD (AMEND 1) From: "R. Sweener" Date: 1995/05/22 Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan Hi, people. Dan's posting earlier of another Gaslights cd led me to do a little more inquiring about this material. With some info Craig Jaimeson sent me, I realized that the Gaslight Tapes cd doesn't include the first Gaslight performance as I had thought. Therefore either Documents Of Bob Dylan (4cd) or Rare Live Performances (3cd) would be the ones to get for gaslights, assuming your interested in collecting all the 60's material on cd. Craig's help on things like this allowed me to sort out what I needed. Royal Albert Hall / Manchester was a particularly awful mess. Without the info Craig sent me, I'd be lost. So I really am thankful to him for all his help. The following change is necessary to the list I posted. Regarding the gaslight and Finjan Club performances: _____________________________________________________ [007] Rare Live Performances in the Sixties/ Bob Dylan [1962] [007, 022, 030] Vol. I-III, The History Series [3 CDs] Nagic Music CD 31008 OR: [007] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] 4 CD's Magic Music CD 31001, 31002, 31003, 31004 _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ [022] Rare Live Performances in the Sixties/ Bob Dylan [1962] [007, 022, 030] OR: [022] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ [030] Rare Live Performances in the Sixties/ Bob Dylan [1962] [007, 022, 030] OR: [030] Documents of Bob Dylan [007, 022, 030] _____________________________________________________ This also brings up a point about the list I created. The Gaslight Tapes cd and the Finjan Club cd by Yellow Dog are still fine cds to get if you just want the material that's on them. Yet I've bounced them off the list. This is because the scope of the list is not to name every quality cd out there. Rather it is to name the best ones if one is concerned with a list of cds representing all the material of the 60's in generally the best sound quality, with as little overlap of material on the cds as possible. For this reason, some classic cds like Swingin Pig's Royal Albert Hall didn't make the list. If I hadn't limited the scope of the list in this way, I'd still be working on it. And, especially since I know now which cds I want, I'd rather be listening to Dylan. Doing the list this way allowed me to offer something useful to you all, while still leaving the door open for more complete lists, supplements, etc, in the future. I'm still glad to see improvements to the list, of course. If Dan hadn't mentioned, that cd set, I wouldn't have struck upon my error. So if you've got suggestions, feel free. Thanks. Rick

So my question to you is, do you know the sound quality of Halloween Mask to be superior to that of the Document cds (or the Black Panther copies)? Let us know on this.. If it is only equal in sound quality, then I personally would still opt for the cds I listed, as you get the Newport material as well. I chose to list the Document/Panther CDs based on info from an owner and EDLIS opinion. >Bob Dylan & The Hawks Play Fucking Loud - Birmingham 5/12/66, Liverpool 5/14 > Sheffield 5/16, Manchester 5/17 >(haven't heard the one you mentioned, but it can't be much better than this) ... >Of course, there's also Manchester Prayer & Live at the Royal Albert Hall >which are the best sources I know of for 5/17/66...if there's anything >better I'd sure like to know. A Week In The Life offers all the material found on Play Loud (less one Odean cut) and RAH in what I believe to be equal sound quality (or at least so close that I still chose to list it for the money saving value.) Manchester Prayer is not listed because the material is covered in equal quality on Before The Crash 1 and 2, along with the REAL Albert Hall performances of 5/26 and 5/27. >I'm sure there are several others as well....I've heard there's a CD of >Bristol 5/10/66 but I can't recall the name. Please let me know if you find out the name of this one. I want it. ***** I really appreciate your opinions on this because I'd like to see the list improve. I originally listed all cd sources I knew of for each event, but felt like it was a little unwieldy and would be more useful just to list prefered sources. Then, if someone sees another cd that I didn't list, they can always check with rmd readers or EDLIS to see if its better (and if it is, I'd like to insert it on the list in place of what I have.) I also left it lean so it would be easier for Ben Taylor to add to his homepage. If he can handle it, I (or anyone) can always add a supplement to show what other cd sources I know to be out there besides what I included on my prefered list. Thanks, Rick Sweeney

All these comparisons, hard to judge, though I only pay attention to those who have heard both side by side. A Week In The Life Of is slower, definitely. It was remastered in the sense of changing the speed. Which is more authentic? I think the faster version, but maybe I just got used to it that way. If you have heard both side by side then do post! ----------------------------------------------------------------- The CD recording is not simply a clone of Play Fucking Loud! [T- 266] though they are related. It includes all of the tracks found there except the legitimately released Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues [2] in good quality! It also includes all of the tracks found on the famous Royal Albert Hall 1966 [T-121] in its many incarnations, some say this CD has the most correct speed, slightly slowed down from many of the others. The order and repetition of songs is a bit odd, but some may like this CD as it packs a lot in... Indeed there are those who prefer this CD to Royal Albert Hall 1966 [T-121] and Play Fucking Loud! [T-266]. The front insert has an interesting blurred photograph which includes the famous American flag backdrop. And Bob Dylan is in his entertaining check suit... There is also a version where the only difference is plain white packaging with the only text being, "In 1966 There Was". -----------------------------------------------------------------

I have not heard either of these boots, but I thought I'd offer a thought about determining the correct speed: see if it is in correct pitch. If you play your E (or whatever) harmonica along with Bob, and the recording is sharp, then the speed is too high. I know this can be very easily done, as I used to spend a lot of time playing guitar with records to learn songs, and fine adjustment of the speed control of the turntable from record to record was often necessary.

I did not know at the time that the rest of the concert was on the Newport CD...it was my mistake, I should have looked at the numbers more closely. As for sound quality, I have heard both CDs and did not notice a major difference in quality, although I only briefly listened to the Black Panther CD...if everyone believes that it's a bit better sounding than Halloween Mask, and if the remaining songs are available on another CD, then I suppose EDLIS has been right all along... As for the Week in the Life vs. Play Fucking Loud, I have yet to hear Week in the Life, but unless there is a tremendous difference in sound, I'll probably still prefer Play Fucking Loud. For one thing, it's got the extra Odeon track, for another, the songs are in the order they were played in concert, and finally, there's a great picture on the cover.

Can't say I used pictures in assessing the recommendations I included, but I did take into consideration the fact that A Week In The Life has seven tracks from Free Trade Hall 5-17-66 that are not on Play Fucking Loud. Coupled with the essential Before The Crash Vol. 2 (it's the only cd source for the *actual* RAH performance), this gives you the complete 5/17 show. That said, a legit release of 5-17 on Bootlegs 4-5 would make that extra bonus on A Week In The Life a mute point. I hope it does soon! Rick

But am I correct in >thinking Desolation Row (5) on Manchester Prayer is Royal Albert Hall >27 May 1966 [5/155]]?? I'll make a note of inclusion for Manchester Prayer for those wanting the best sound for those tracks. Regardless of whether you buy Manchester Prayer or not, you will still need "A Week In The Life" and "Before The Crash Vol 2" for the other material. Therefore, I myself will probably go ahead and live with the lesser sound quality found on those two cds in regards to the acoustic 5/17, and not buy Manchester Prayer. Why? I'd rather wait for what will most certainly be the best sound quality on Bootlegs 4-5. When that is released, Prayer will hopefully be obsolete. When is the problem, though. Rick

Until I hear that it is significantly better than the Panther/Document sets, then I still have to go with Panther/Document for a reason I stated before-- they include Newport '65 on the 2 cds. Again, the exclusion of certain cds from the list does not necesarily mean they are not up to par. The list was actually a personal game plan for collecting the 60's on cd which focused on the criteria of the best sound quality coupled with as little overlap of material (and wasted money) as possible. People may want to adjust it here and there, especially if you want to make sound quality the only criteria. I'm glad to see people make their comments on it, as Les and others have done so as to help people fine tune it where they see fit. Thanks, Rick

Concerning the electric set: I haven't done any serious research on the different speeds but I can say that the speed is closer to the "Like A Rolling Stone" CD bootleg than the recent "A Week In The Life". Before having the opportunity to hear the Bootleg Series promo tape, I was convinced the correct speed for this material was the 'slowed down' version released on "A Week In The Life". It sounded more natural to me. However, compare the Manchester tracks on this CD to the others, from Sheffield etc. The latter run faster. So why does no one complain about those? My own personal opinion now is that the Bootleg Series promo represents the true speed. And does the speed Dylan was taking at the time have any bearing on this discussion? If you are I prefer the "slowed down" speed! > > And does the speed Dylan was taking at the time have any bearing on this > discussion? I didn't mean to imply this, I meant his *singing* voice didn't sound stoned enough. On the long-dragged-out-dropping-off end to lines. Anyway, thanks to you & John Perry I'm feeling much happier about the prospect of sitting down & listening to the tapes. Tonight if I've time....tomorrow at the latest ....I'll post again then. > > Ben Taylor > -- > Leeds, England > bptaylor@laguna.demon.co.uk - http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n246543 > > -- Andrew Muir
Subject: BOB DYLAN: The 60's On CD [part 1] From: rsweener@aol.com (RSweener) Date: 1996/03/15 Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan BOB DYLAN: The 60's On CD This is a reference to the Bob Dylan material of the 1960's that has been documented on cd, aside from legitimate releases. (This is not concerned with sideman performances, film soundtracks, or interviews). These titles are what I believe to be the best sources, based on info I have gathered from various ftp files, rec.music.dylan postings, inquiries I have made to people on the net, and help from EDLIS. This is updated to include new releases in the past year. Hope it will be useful to you. A SAMPLE ENTRY: _____________________________________________________ [025] Carnegie Hall Hootenanny Sept 1962 5 songs Bob Dylan's Dream Vol. 2 [021,025,045,096] 2 of 5 songs _____________________________________________________ The first number in brackets is the number assigned by Krogsgaard for that performance. To its right, the identity and date of the performance is given. This is followed by the number of circulating *unreleased* songs in that performance. To the right of the cd title in brackets are Krogs. numbers of the other performances that are included to some degree on that cd. Use them as a cross-reference. To the right of these brackets, I give the number of the unreleased songs that are included on the disc. If no number of songs is given here, it indicates the disc contains all the unreleased songs. Regarding two cds in particular: The Lonesome Sparrow Sings [Black Nite Crash] and Thin Wild Mercury Music [Spank] My information for Lonesome Sparrow is incomplete, but I do know that there are three unreleased tracks on Thin Wild that are not on Sparrow, and at least one unreleased track on Sparrow that is not on Thin Wild. Otherwise, they are very similar, but you will need both if you want it all. They are both quality discs.
