Two new releases seen on the street today

Acetates on the Tracks vol 1, 61-65
A contender for the Now Thatıs What I Call Hard To Find vol 37 award for
deceased equine flagellation. A variety of tracks inc Wichita, Milk Cow
Blues, You Donıt Have To Do That, Number one, Lunatic Princess etc. God
knows whatıs on subsequent volumes, but youıve probably got them already.
The dealer said he was selling it half price.

Blood On The Tapes, Columbus Records, Copyright Sono Music.
Label is pastiche of Columbia, with some funny notes about blank packaging.

Source A&R studios, New York 1974.
16 Sept. If You See Her, Lilly Rosemary, Call Letter Blues, Idiot Wind,
Tangled up in Blue. 17 Sept: Youıre a Big Girl Now, Shelter from the
Storm. 19 Sept: If you See her, Tangled up in Blue, Up To Me, Idiot
Wind. Sound Ex/Vg. I donıt have The Bootleg Series or Heylin to hand, so
I canıt say whatıs new or where it has been released before. Perhaps
someone else could do that? Yeah, I know, EDLIS needs photocopies.

New? Call Letter Blues - on Bootleg series. Idiot Wind - not listed in Heylin. New or wrong date. Tangled up in Blue - Bootleg Series 17 Sept: Shelter not listed in Heylin. New or wrong date 19 Sept: If You see Her: not listed. New or wrong date Tangled: not listed. New/wrong Up to Me: listed as from 23-25 Sept sessions Idiot Wind: Bootleg Series. I havenıt compared this CD with other sources yet, so either there are some new finds or itıs a compilation of existing material. Nice though.

From: Lars Farena Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan Subject: Blood On The Tapes 2nd pressing available Date: 26 Jul 1997 05:29:39 -0700 I'm very pleased to learn that the second pressing of Blood On The Tapes (Columbus, 1997) is now available. This should be readily obtainable from your usual source of imports/rarities. These are out-takes from the original Blood On The Tracks New York sessions in excellent quality. The insert contains the text of the Grammy-award winning sleeve notes by Pete Hamill, sadly now omitted by Columbia from the official CD packaging. Perhaps they noticed that Hamill's quote If you're makin' love to her, kiss her for the kid, Who always has respected her, for doing what she did. had been replaced in the released Minnesota version by If you get close to her, kiss her once for me I always have respected her for busting out and gettin' free. Enjoy! Lars

This can be confirmed by checking the tracks on Blood On The Tracks, Biograph and the Bootleg Series with the take information in Michael Krogsgaard's Recording Sessions article in issue 55 of The Telegraph. It illustrates the desirability of getting an out-takes album such as Blood On The Tapes in order to hear Bob's original intentions. Alan

I believe it was made by the CD-R method, whatever that is exactly. It is a reddish color with no indication of who put it together or when. The paper looks like it was printed on a home printer. There is a discussion of the contents on the back of the front cover. I think this particular edition is quite recent (someone has made them recently and is selling them currently). It is 69 and half minutes long. It has the following cuts: Tangled up in Blue You're a Big Girl Now Idiot Wind Rosemary, Lily & the Jack of Hearts If You See Her Say Hello Shelter from the Storm ----------------- Up to Me Tangled Up in Blue [again] Call Letter Blues Idiot Wind [again] If You See Her Say Hello [again] I believe the last five cuts (below the hyphen line) are the ones available on Biograph and the non-bootleg Bootleg Series and some of the others might be on other collections, like Genuine Bootleg Series or Hard to Find (I'm not sure). Not all of the songs on Blood on the Tracks are on here and there are outtakes here that were not represented on Blood on the Tracks (Up to Me and Call Letter Blues). I don't mind the fact that this collection is redundant with Biograph and Bootleg Series. It allows me a chance to hear certain songs in different circumstances. In particular "Call Letter Blues" and "Up to Me" are good to hear more often. I have never really enjoyed Blood on the Tracks. For some reason I have enjoyed listening this CD more than the official release. But the sound quality is not as good. I don't mind this, as long as it is not worse than other bootleg releases of the same material. Does anyone know? The sound is not bad as far as bootlegs go. It is just that these are studio recordings. I seem now to have an appreciation of the songs from the Blood on the Tracks sessions, but only when I hear them anywhere other than on the original album. I like the 1978 tour rehearsals (as found on Darkness at the Break of Noon, for example) and live performances (e.g., the Simple Twist of Fate at Lisle, Illinois a few days ago). Does anyone know if the quality of Blood on the Outtakes is lower than it should be? Should I be looking for another bootleg CD to replace it? --Paul B.

Date: Mon, 29 Dec 1997 15:07:07 -0500 I have neither Blood on the Tapes nor Blood on the Outtracks, however I have seen Blood on the Outtracks at a store and it is a CD-R by Magic Mushroom. I think it is a digital CD-R copy of Blood on the Tapes. It has a computer printout color insert which includes a quote (I believe from Crazy Joe) about Blood on the Tapes. Magic Mushroom did the same thing (Make CD-R copy) of the Renaldo & Clara Soundtrack.

It contains all the circulating outtakes from the New York Blood on the tracks sessions, five of which are officially released on the Bootleg Series and Biograph, one on the Jerry MCGuire Soundtrack and the rest from the original test pressing. Good sound, beautiful versions (generally), so if your only reason to buy Biograph is to get Up to Me, you might save a few bucks here. The packaging is inventive too, of course, and the liner notes are the original, Grammy-winning ones from 1974/5. -- Eyolf Ĝstrem Rackarbergsg 30:410 S-752 32 Uppsala, Sweden -------------------------------------------------------- E-post: Eyolf.Ostrem@musik.uu.se http://hem.passagen.se/obrecht (Musicology) http://hem.passagen.se/obrecht/backpages/ (Dylan) http://hem.passagen.se/obrecht/sinenomine/ (Sine Nomine)

For you and for Ken Evans, the track listing of Blood On The Tapes is as below, my comments are based on Michael Krogsgaard's article in Telegraph 55. You can use this boot CD and the regular Blood On The Tracks to recreate the original New York sessions album. Columbia Studios, New York, 16 Sep 75 1 If You See Her, Say Hello Same as on the Bootleg Series 2 Lily, Rosemary & The Jack Of Hearts From the original album, still unreleased 3 Call Letter Blues Same as on the Bootleg Series 4 Idiot Wind Basic take, without overdubs from 8 Oct 75, of the original album track, still unreleased 5 Tangled Up In Blue Same as on the Bootleg Series Columbia Studios, New York, 17 Sep 75 6 You're A Big Girl, Now From the original album, remixed for Biograph 7 Shelter From the Storm This sounds like the alternate version from Jerry Maguire Columbia Studios, New York, 19 Sep 75 8 If You See Her, Say Hello From the original album, still unreleased 9 Tangled Up In Blue From the original album, still unreleased 10 Up To Me Same as on Biograph 11 Idiot Wind Same as on the Bootleg Series If anyone has more information on these, please let the group know. In Telegraph 55 Krogsgaard gives 8 Oct 74, 10.00-14.30 as the date and time of an overdub session for Idiot Wind with Paul Griffin. Griffin's overdubs were to take 6 from 16 Sep 74, and the track was then released on the original version of BOTT. Musicians listed by Krogsgaard for 16 Sep 74 are Eric Weissberg (gtr), Tony Brown (bs), Richard Crooks (dr), Barry Kornfeld (gtr), Thomas McFaul (kbds), and Charles Brown (gtr). Paul Griffin may have been there, but he didn't get paid :-). Alan

"Joaquin Antique" LP was the first bootleg that brought us the original versions of "BOTT" songs. But now it's really "antique", out of date. Some CD bootlegs, including "Blood On The Tapes", surpass this LP in sound quality, but they are yet another trash with low sound quality and a lot of hiss. The excellent quality tape (DAT copy directly off the test pressing/acetate) is circulating among collectors. I know some people get hurt when I speak ill of the bootlegs. I am sorry for that. But please remember that I do not have to be satisfied with the poor sound quality. Masato Kato Love Minus Zero/No Limit

I have no idea how the new NY Sessions disc sounds. but that one's intended to give the feel of the test pressing, not a session compilation like BOTTapes. NY Sessions has got everything at the original acetate speed and is essentially what would have been released had Bob not had second thoughts in Minnesota. some people find such things fascinating. frankly i don't give a shit about that sort of thing. but then again i would have found BOTT duller than DITG if Bob had left it alone. :-) regards, Dino

I thought I had the "original" -- the one with the blurry picture of Bob that's a different photo than the one on Blood on the Tracks, and the blue back cover with the track listings. But recently I found a version which reproduces the Blood on the Tracks cover *exactly*, except for "Tracks" has been changed to "Tapes" and that section is blue instead of red. The back cover is full color, an enlargement of the bottom of the back cover of Blood on the Tracks. In the lower right corner is the Columbia logo, with Columbus apparing below. All other printed matter -- "Promotional issue" etc. -- is the same in both. However, the the inside (reverse) of the back insert of this one has the initials J.B. over a large star of David. Along the "spine" areas on this reverse it says "The answer my frieind [sic], is blowin' in the wind. the answer is blowin' in the wind". The CD itself is apparently a CD-R with "Blood on the Tapes" in the same font and arrangement as the cover printed directly onto the CD. Can anyone enlighten me on this anomaly? Thanks. Gil
