Review by Lonesome Sparrow
On 22 April 1976 The Rolling Thunder Revue (Bob Dylan and other artists) gave two concerts at the Bellevue Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater, Florida, the first in the afternoon and the second in the evening. Both shows were filmed for a TV special called "Hard Rain". This original "Hard Rain" was rejected and not broadcasted. It consisted of the following selections:
Mr. Tambourine Man | afternoon |
The Times They Are A-Changin' | afternoon |
Blowin' In The Wind | afternoon |
I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine | afternoon |
Diamonds And Rust [sung by Joan Baez] | evening |
When I Paint My Masterpiece | afternoon |
Like A Rolling Stone | evening |
Isis | evening |
Just Like A Woman | evening |
Knockin' On Heaven's Door | evening |
Lay Lady Lay | evening |
A second "Hard Rain" TV special was made from selections from the concert that The Rolling Thunder Revue gave on 23 May 1976 at the Hughes Stadium of the Colorado State University in Fort Collins. This special was broadcast by NBC on 14 September 1976. It consisted of the following selections:
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Blowin' In The Wind
Deportee
I Pity The Poor Immigrant
Shelter From The Storm
Maggie's Farm
One Too Many Mornings
Mozambique
Idiot Wind
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
On 10 September 1976 the album "Hard Rain" was released. This album contains 5 selections from the 23 May concert, 1 of which had not been included in the TV special, and 4 selections from the concert that The Rolling Thunder Revue gave on 16 May 1976 at the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The track list of the album is as follows:
1. | Maggie's Farm | 23 May (also in the TV special) |
2. | One Too Many Mornings | 23 May (also in the TV special) |
3. | Stuck Inside Of Mobile | 16 May |

The CD of which this is a review can be regarded as a collection of outtakes of the "Hard Rain" album, since it contains all the selections from the 2 "Hard Rain" TV specials that were not included on the album, except for 2 selections, "Blowin' In The Wind" from 22 April, afternoon, and "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" from 23 May. I assume that the reason that these 2 selections were not included is that the CD then would have included 2 performances of each of these songs, for now no song appears twice on it. In addition the CD contains a selection from the 23 May concert, "Deportees", that was not included in the TV specials nor on the "Hard Rain" album. The track list of the CD is as follows. Track durations are given in the format a:aa/b:bb/c:cc, in which b:bb is the duration of the actual song and a:aa and c:cc indicate how much time of the track is due to just crowd noise, introductions, tunings etc.

Moe Magid included this CD in his list of best unofficial releases of 1995 in Deep Beneath The Waves - 1995 year in review".
Mr. Brian Magid (the same person as Moe Magid?) wrote about this CD (8 May 1995, rec.music.dylan):
> Apparently, the Ft. > Collins material completes the broadcast (rest is on the "Hard Rain" CD) > and is excellent quality. Clearwater material excellent, IMO. Recommendedto which he added (11 May 1995, rec.music.dylan):
> I'd like to add to my post the other day regarding > the new CD "Like A Rolling Stone" (Angry Dino label - "Hard Rain" TV show > songs not on official LP (6) plus Biltmore Hotel, Clearwater, FLA 4-22-76 > (10 tracks), excellent sound, highly recommended). Just want to say that the > version of "Like A Rolling Stone" from the Biltmore really kicks, possibly > the best I've heard (other than H61 LP version). Will go so far as to say it is > worth the price of the disk just for that one song.Brian Kelly picked another song as highlight (May 1996, rec.music.dylan):
> Catch the rest of the Hard Rain performance on the boot cd The > Hidden TV Shows, in particular listen to the amazing version of I Pity The > Poor Immirgrant, then shout with amazement at the genius of the man.I think Mr. Brian Magid words "excellent sound" are an exaggeration. EDLIS boot agent Jeff wrote (18 February 1997, rec.music.dylan):
> Sound quality from ISIS 60 is reported to be as you would > expect from a bootleg video feed -- has distortion and echo. I find it > enjoyable since I like Rolling Thunder.I doubt whether giving video feeds as source for this CD is correct, since the 1st TV special wasn't broadcasted nor released and the 2nd one didn't contain "Railroad Boy" whereas the CD does.
Regarding the rest of the 4 concerts out of which selections were made for the "Hard Rain" specials and album. I don't know of any other circulating tracks from the 2 concerts of 22 April, nor do I know what other songs were played at these concerts. The unofficial CD " Hold The Forth For What It's Worth" contains a soundboard of the complete 16 May concert, including the songs selected for the "Hard Rain" album. I don't know of any other circulating tracks from the 23 May concert, but I do have a set list with omission of the non Dylan performances:
