Review by Lonesome Sparrow

On 1 May 1970 Dylan held a number of sessions with George Harrison and some other musicians. Only one take from these sessions has been officially released, namely "If Not For You" on "The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3". Many of the other takes circulate and all of these circulating takes except for one are on this CD. Missing is "Working On A Guru", which can be found on "The Genuine Bootleg Series", "Acetates On The Tracks Vol. 2" and "Odds & Ends - Unsurpassed Maestro Vol. 1". Not circulating are several other takes of "If Not For You", several takes of "Sign On The Window", several takes of "Time Passes Slowly", a take of "Went To See The Gypsy", and a take of "It Ain't Me Babe".

According to the CD I have (the one with order number 4411218) the recordings on it were made in Nashville, Tennessee, in May 1970. The date is correct, but the city was New York. It seems that on the older version (the one with order number NASH 105) the date was also wrong, being given as April/May 1969.

The recordings on this CD are informal. There is no calling of CO and take numbers. There is little serious music-making going on. The general approach is in the manner of: What shall we play now? How about... Okay. And all that with a lot of chuckling. The exception is a wonderful rendition of "Song To Woody". I don't mean to put down the rest of the stuff, though. I find it all quite enjoyable.

The sound quality is excellent, but on the CD "Yesterday", which contains the same tracks from the sessions with George Harrison, it's just a tiny little bit better. They are also on the more recent CD "Almost Went To See Elvis", which I haven't heard.

The last 2 tracks on this CD are from one of the "Self Portrait" sessions. They seem to be the only circulating outtakes from that album and this seems to be the only CD that contains them. Unfortunately the sound quality is bad.
