Review by Lonesome Sparrow

This CD contains 15 tracks that according to Clinton Heylin's "The Recording Sessions" were recorded on 18 February 1969 and are all the circulating tracks from the session held that day. According to Heylin 3 more tracks were recorded on a session that was held the previous day. According to his sessionography these 3 tracks are circulating, but in the following commentary he says that 2 of the tracks remain unheard, so this must be one of the many errors in his book. Anyway, they are not on this CD.

These 15 tracks have a hum through them, which if this were a vinyl record would make you think that there were a grounding problem with your record player. The hum is clearly hearable in between tracks, but is drowned by the music. Aside from this hum the sound quality is very good.

Of these 15 tracks, "Girl From The North Country", has been officially released on the album "Nashville Skyline". The other tracks haven't been officially released. The duration of "Girl From The North Country" is on the official release 2 to 3 seconds shorter; this is not due to that the official release contains lesser of it. So apparently on this CD this song plays a little too slow and hence I assume this is the case with the other 14 tracks.

The CD gives track 14 the title "Blue Yodel", Heylin's "The Recording Sessions" calls it "T for Texas", Olof's Chronicles call it "T For Texas (Blue Yodel No. 1)".

The CD and Olof's Chronicles call track 15 "Blue Yodel No. 5", Heylin's "The Recording Sessions" calls it "Blue Yodel No. 4".

The CD and Olof's Chronicles call track 2 "Mountain Dew". Heylin's "The Recording Sessions" calls it "Good Ol' Mountain Dew".

As to the performance quality of this Dylan/Cash session: These are just two guys having some fun in the studio. The result is enjoyable to listen to, but don't expect anything outstanding. For example, "Girl From The North Country" can't stand in the shadow of Dylan's solo version on "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan".

After this Dylan/Cash session follow the 3 songs Dylan performed on TV in "The Johnny Cash Show", which the CD calls "The Johnny Carson Show". The first songs he does alone, on the third he duets with Cash. These tracks do not have the hum of the previous 15, but they have some hiss and aside from that the sound quality is less, being fair instead of very good. Performance quality: hm.

The CD ends with half of the "Nashville Skyline" album in the quadraphonic mix. I had to play my "Nashville Skyline" CD and this CD side by side to hear what differs in the quad mix. Not much of a difference. These tracks have a hum through them and sound like they're copied from vinyl. Sound quality is less than the Dylan/Cash session and better than "The Johnny Cash Show", so let's say it's good.

The index marks of nearly all tracks on this CD are a little too late. Track 1 begins with 4 mute seconds.
