Rick, this my my response to a similar request over 2 years ago. (my file was
dated 31 Jan 1994). In hindsite I may change some minor details but it is still

This was the important clue. If we accept that the 'Bootleg series'
liner notes are 'moderately' accurate then "70086" fits in with
'House Carpenter', and the rest of it all falls into place.
Finally 'Series of Dreams' issue 7 reviews the FWOT CD.
Unfortunately this article has introduced a few bits of miss-information
about the Freewheelin O/T's. I'll adddress them here.
The track listing has been misprinted, hopefully this post will sort
that bit out.
Secondly, the 'missing' tracks are not: 'Down the Highway' & 'Honey just..'
as these *were* officially released on the LP/CD.
There are a few missing tracks:
The different mix of 'Lonesome Whistle', and almost all
the 6th December session (8 tracks).
(not surprising as these were circulated after the CD was made I expect).

All of these tracks would appear to come from four sessions
[019], [023], [027] and [029]. Precise attributions are not
easy to ascertain. The two listings of the tracks have tiny
unimportant differences in some small details.
Track 14 - Sally Girl - is listed by both Krogsgaard and
Vigotone as originating from the October 1962 [027] session.
However, on the recording the song is introduced as "70086
take 4". According to Krogsgaard the sessions occurring on
24 and 25 April 1962 [019] includes catalogue numbers Co.
70100-3, Co. 70100-4, Co. 70101-1, and Co. 70101-2. The next
earlier catalogue numbers listed by Krogsgaard are Co.
68743-2 and Co. 68745-3 on 22 November 1961 [011].
"How many roads must a man walk down...
Bob Dylan has walked down many roads. For most of his 22
years he "rode freight trains for kicks and got beat up for
laughs, cut grass for quarters and sang for dimes." And his
songs today are the sounds he sopped up all those years on
the road -- "the coyote's call and the train whistle's moan,
the ol' time pals an' first run gals, the faces you can't
find again." [Does anyone know the source of this quote?]
Bob does what a true folk singer is supposed to do -- sing
about the important ideas and events of the times. And he
does it better than anybody else.
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan Outtakes features seven of Bob's
own compositions, including both sides of his rare debut
single. Also classic interpretations of songs by icons
Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, and Elvis Presley. Includes
four songs in stereo and additional bonus tracks featuring
noteworthy alternate takes.
Hear it and you'll know why Bob Dylan is the voice of the

A great sounding CD. The studio tracks are all excellent and
(haven't A-B'ed them yet with other boots) are better than
anything else I've heard. The acetates are very good but
sound like acetates, i.e. surface noise.
The artwork is excellent too. The front piece is a picture
of Dylan and Suze Rotolo, arm in arm with Dylan pointing off
to the right. Seemingly this is an alternate picture from
the Freewheelin' album shooting. No one seems to have seen
this one before. The back piece has a studio session picture
of Dylan and John Hammond.
What else can I say, if you like this era, this is the best
that's out on CD that I'm aware of. This will be a classic
boot, up there with Manchester Prayer [T-120]. Unless you
already have this material in excellent sound (and I would
still give this an audition) don't pass it up, I don't think
it will be around long."

version with one less verse on the promotional edition of
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) and on The Bootleg Series
(1991).

"Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions" in "The Telegraph".

lyrics look like Robert Johnson's and it seems to be a Bob Dylan

much Lonnie Johnson" or something like that in the liner notes of
"Biograph". Did he eventually mean the tune? What Lonnie Johnson
song could be meant?)

Clinton Heylin mentioned in his great book "Stolen Moments" a "late
October 1962" session including the following songs: "Lonesome
Whistle", "Sally Gal", "Going To New Orleans", "John Birch Society
Blues", and "Rambling, Gambling Willie". In (one of) his following
book(s), "Behind The Shades", Mr. Heylin redated all these songs on
April 24/25. Michael Krogsgaard's research has not only confirmed
that, but allowed to say, which song was recorded on April 24 and
which one was recorded on April 25.

Take one - according to M.K. and to the copy of the sheet
- was a "short false start". If this is correct, track 24 on
VIGO can not be "take 1". Then, it must be take 2 or - see
below - take 4. It also could be that the "b" on the sheet
was meant for take 2 and put by mistake in column 2. If so
take 1 is track 24 on Vigo. I don't know. But what we can say is that

The title says it all. There is no indication in M.Krogsgaard's
article if Take 2 was a complete take, a short false start or a long
false start. If you consider all three possibilities, Take 2 could be
the released single version (track 4 on VIGO) or track 16 on VIGO or
track 19 on VIGO. Glen Dundas in his book "Tangled Up In Tapes"
dated the four circulating takes of "Mixed-Up Confusion" on November,
14. For that session on November 14, Krogsgaard wrote that the tapes
and the recordings sheets were not available, so as long as there is
no new information, I stick to Glen Dundas. Although there are some
indications, that the four released/circulated MIxed-Up Confusion
takes are not all from the same session. But I don't want to
speculate on this. What did Clinton Heylin write in
his new book (which I ordered in November 1995 but haven't got until
today) about this issue?

uncertainty - you can say track 8 on VIGO was recorded on October
26 but not as the last take ("Let's do it again fast"). The indication
on VIGO as "Take 1" seems to me not very reliable because the other
track of "That's Alright Mama" was indicated as "Take 2" (not only on
the VIGO CD) but take 2 - see above - had a false start.

Thanks to Michael Krogsgaard's great research, I guess a lot of
questions about the recording dates of the "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan"
takes and outtakes are clarified. Nevertheless, some things are still
in question, at least for me. But I hope - sooner or later - we will
have the opportunity to hear some more or even all the recorded takes,
not only for to clear remaining questions about recording dates,
takes, and the backing of some songs but for to HEAR those songs
I deeply love and which are soaked from the work and soul of some
other great people and artists like Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams,
Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Lonnie Johnson, John Steinbeck and
many more.
